Digesting Plastic
styrofoam eating worms
create new bioplastic
In this research project we teamed up with thousands of mealworms to transform expanded polystyrene into an innovative bioplastic that can be used for dry packaging and other applications. The new material is fully biodegradable and ready for the nature of a circular economy.
Scaling this process has the potential to not only produce a powerful new material, but also degrade and utilize various polystyrene waste streams such as single use food packaging or insulation materials.
